The Department of Biology and Evolution of Marine Organisms (BEOM) focus on fundamental biological mechanisms in marine organisms allowing animals to deal with the challenge of Life on Earth.

By applying multi-faceted approaches we focus on i. the regulatory mechanisms that direct development of organisms from fertilization to adulthood, and ii. the genomic, cellular, and neural machinery underlying biological, physiological and behavioral plasticity of organisms to tackle adaptation and evolution.

The study of marine organisms allow us to exploit possible sources of natural products and metabolic processes for the use in biotechnology including the food industry and human health.

The know-how and expertise of researchers, technologists and technicians belonging to BEOM cover a broad spectrum of scientific fields, including molecular biology, biology of reproduction and development, signal transduction, gene regulation and genetics, bioinformatics, comparative genomics, cell biology, physiology, ecotoxicology, biochemistry, zoology, physiology, neurosciences and behavioral biology. These skills benefit from the availability and extensive experience working on different species at different evolutionary distances belonging to Protostomes and Deuterostomes.

Research activities include field and laboratory based experiments by applying numerous techniques including, for example: manipulation of gene function such as knock-down, knock-out and transgenesis by microinjection and electroporation; high-throughput genomics, transcriptomics (microarray, RNA-Seq, ChIP-Seq, and Real Time quantitative PCR); biological assays, spectrophotometry, spectrofluorimetry; high-resolution imaging using Confocal Laser Sheet Microscopy (CLSM) associated with fluorescent in situ hybridization (FISH) and immunohistochemistry; classical and electron microscopy (SEM, TEM); electrophysiology and behavioral and cognitive neuroscience methods.

biblioteca

The Library of the Stazione Zoologica was established in 1873. It is located in a five-floor structure build within an internal courtyard of the main SZN building. The first collection of the Library was donated by Anton Dohrn to "assist mightily all those, that come to Naples to work with Marine Zoology or Botany" (letter to Charles Darwin, 1872). Today the Library Collections include over 100,000 volumes (about 4 km of shelves), a collection of 5000 miscellaneous, early publications and reprints, and over 2,000 electronic titles and scientific databases.

From 1875 until 1955 the Library was located in the Fresco Room of the SZN. This room was dedicated to music and leisure, and decorated in 1873 with a cycle of frescoes by the German painter Hans von Marées and the German sculptor and architect Adolf von Hildebrand.

Our mission: to support research through access to information resources, collections, and services.

Services *

  • Bibliographic research
  • Consultation
  • Photocopies and Reproductions
  • Loan (only for institutions)
  • Authorization for Publications

* Access and facilities are open to the public, with some restrictions.

Projects

The Library, as part of MAB, participates in educational projects organized by the unit. In 2014-2015 as part of activities for schools ("Catch a Book", "The School goes on board") it introduces children to reading by means  of recreational activities like a treasure hunt whose clues, about the sea and its inhabitants, were hidden inside books, following a trail differentiated by school and class.

CUGThe Guarantee Committee (CUG) is an organization established in compliance with art. 21 of Law 183 of 4 November 2010 to foster the well-being of workers and oppose discrimination.

The CUG replaces the Committee for equal opportunities and the Joint Committee on the phenomenon of mobbing. It unifies the competences of these former committees in one body, assuming all their functions provided for by the law.

The CUG aims to promote a culture of respect for the dignity of the workforce and to protect people from all forms of direct or indirect discrimination, whether linked to gender, age, sexual orientation, ethnic origin, disability or language, which can affect access, treatment and working conditions, professional training, career progression and safety. In this context, the CUG performs propositional, consultative and verification tasks.

According to the mentioned aims, the CUG of the Stazione Zoologica Anton Dohrn in Naples (CUG-SZN) acts to detect discomfort conditions and to work out strategies able to improve the work environment, guarantee equal opportunities and promote the well-being of all members of the workforce.

The Zoological Station was among the first institutes in Italy to sign the Charter for equal opportunities, demonstrating the efforts made to enhance pluralism, contributing to the fight against all forms of discrimination.

The document can be freely consulted by other public administrations to adhere to equal opportunities policies.

All contributions of ideas to improve the working conditions at SZN are welcome! cug(at)szn.it
