The Historical Archives of the Stazione Zoologica Anton Dohrn of Naples (ASZN) preserve documents related to the activity of the Institution from its foundation (1872) onwards. The archive was set up in 1969. It included institutional documents, private and public correspondence, photographs, scientific drawings, etc., and now holds also numerous historical documents donated to the Institute over the years.

The Historical Archives are subject to the Decreto Legislativo n. 42 - 22 January 2004 (Codice dei Beni Culturali e del paesaggio), and are under the supervision of the Ministry of Cultural Heritage and Activities and Tourism - Soprintendenza Archivistica della Calabria e della Campania.

Projects

archivioThe Archive, as part of MAB, participates in educational projects organized by the unit: during the years 2014-2015 and as part of activities for schools ("Catch a Book", "The School goes on board"). It introduces children to the life sciences through the story of the Institute. Within the frame of the project “La Villa Comunale di Napoli” we show them the evolution of the three buildings of which the SZN is now composed (by September 1873 the first one was ready. A second building, connected with the first by a bridge, was added in 1885-1888, the courtyard and the east wing were built in 1905).

As part of the dissemination activities “Maggio dei Monumenti”, we contextualized the history of the Institute within the history and growth of the Vity of Naples: the City assigned to Anton Dohrn, free of charge, a plot of land right on the water front on which he was allowed to construct and operate the SZN.

In 2015, the "International Year of light and technologies based on light" we analyzed, in collaboration with “ABB Reportages,” the person of Etienne-Jules Marey, doctor, engineer, artist and Neapolitan author of the first film images of the history.

Marey was a close friend of Dohrn, with whom he shared dreams, hopes and ideas that led him to analyze the movement of animals and man, and introduced new insights in the realms of science, art and culture.

biblioteca

The Library of the Stazione Zoologica was established in 1873. It is located in a five-floor structure build within an internal courtyard of the main SZN building. The first collection of the Library was donated by Anton Dohrn to "assist mightily all those, that come to Naples to work with Marine Zoology or Botany" (letter to Charles Darwin, 1872). Today the Library Collections include over 100,000 volumes (about 4 km of shelves), a collection of 5000 miscellaneous, early publications and reprints, and over 2,000 electronic titles and scientific databases.

From 1875 until 1955 the Library was located in the Fresco Room of the SZN. This room was dedicated to music and leisure, and decorated in 1873 with a cycle of frescoes by the German painter Hans von Marées and the German sculptor and architect Adolf von Hildebrand.

Our mission: to support research through access to information resources, collections, and services.

Projects

The Library, as part of MAB, participates in educational projects organized by the unit. In 2014-2015 as part of activities for schools ("Catch a Book", "The School goes on board") it introduces children to reading by means  of recreational activities like a treasure hunt whose clues, about the sea and its inhabitants, were hidden inside books, following a trail differentiated by school and class.

CUGThe Guarantee Committee (CUG) is an organization established in compliance with art. 21 of Law 183 of 4 November 2010 to foster the well-being of workers and oppose discrimination.

The CUG replaces the Committee for equal opportunities and the Joint Committee on the phenomenon of mobbing. It unifies the competences of these former committees in one body, assuming all their functions provided for by the law.

The CUG aims to promote a culture of respect for the dignity of the workforce and to protect people from all forms of direct or indirect discrimination, whether linked to gender, age, sexual orientation, ethnic origin, disability or language, which can affect access, treatment and working conditions, professional training, career progression and safety. In this context, the CUG performs propositional, consultative and verification tasks.

According to the mentioned aims, the CUG of the Stazione Zoologica Anton Dohrn in Naples (CUG-SZN) acts to detect discomfort conditions and to work out strategies able to improve the work environment, guarantee equal opportunities and promote the well-being of all members of the workforce.

The Zoological Station was among the first institutes in Italy to sign the Charter for equal opportunities, demonstrating the efforts made to enhance pluralism, contributing to the fight against all forms of discrimination.

The document can be freely consulted by other public administrations to adhere to equal opportunities policies.

All contributions of ideas to improve the working conditions at SZN are welcome! cug(at)szn.it
