biblioteca

The Library of the Stazione Zoologica was established in 1873. It is located in a five-floor structure build within an internal courtyard of the main SZN building. The first collection of the Library was donated by Anton Dohrn to "assist mightily all those, that come to Naples to work with Marine Zoology or Botany" (letter to Charles Darwin, 1872). Today the Library Collections include over 100,000 volumes (about 4 km of shelves), a collection of 5000 miscellaneous, early publications and reprints, and over 2,000 electronic titles and scientific databases.

From 1875 until 1955 the Library was located in the Fresco Room of the SZN. This room was dedicated to music and leisure, and decorated in 1873 with a cycle of frescoes by the German painter Hans von Marées and the German sculptor and architect Adolf von Hildebrand.

In 2014-2015 as part of activities for schools ("Catch a Book", "The School goes on board") it introduces children to reading by means  of recreational activities like a treasure hunt whose clues, about the sea and its inhabitants, were hidden inside books, following a trail differentiated by school and class.
