Title: Research and marine infrastructure strengthening (EMBRC-IT) – Strengthening of the Human Capital
Acronym: PRIMA
Code: CIR01_00029
Research infrastructure targeted by the project: EMBRC - European Marine Biological Resource Centre
Abstract
The main objective of the project is to complete and enhance the infrastructural strengthening realized through the PON PRIMA - with which the Italian node of the European research infrastructure EMBRC, coordinated by the SZN, has obtained a funding aimed at making the infrastructure the most important HUB for marine scientific and technological research at European level - through the strengthening of the corresponding human capital.
This refers not only to researchers and technologists dedicated to the realization of the technical-scientific activities of the enhanced infrastructure, but also to the support to the development and management of governance and to the promotion and strengthening of collaboration networks between infrastructures, at national and European level.
In this way, it will be also possible to respond to the ever-increasing demand for research personnel and expand the critical mass that will be able to develop and use RIs, increasing the positive impact both in terms of research and innovation and, subsequently, of employment and development of the country.

Summary
“FishMPABlue2 Plus” project is the follow-up of FishMPABlue2 and previously of FishMPABlue, which identified a set of governance measures (“FishMPABlue2 SSF governance toolkit”) that can allow marine protected areas (MPAs) to achieve conservation goals while at the same time delivering socio-economic benefits to small scale fisheries. FishMPABlue2 tested such a toolkit (i.e. by implementing these measures), on the field in 11 Pilot MPAs located in 6 Med countries (Spain, France, Italy, Slovenia, Croatia and Greece), to assess and quantify its effectiveness in achieving expected results in terms of MPA ecological effectiveness, benefits delivered to small scale fisheries and social acceptance of management measures by stakeholders. After a collaborative process, i.e. engaging the relevant stakeholders (e.g. MPA managers, fishers etc.) to define governance measures to be implemented in each MPA, a scientific assessment was carried out to assess ecological, economic and social impacts of the implementation of the toolkit in the 11 pilot MPAs.
FishMPABlue 2 Plus, aims to transfer the governance toolbox approach to 11 new Mediterranean MPA from 5 countries: Secche di Tor Paterno MPA (Italy); Secche della Meloria MPA (Italy); Regno di Nettuno MPA (Italy); Pequerolle marine reserve (France); Cap d'Ail marine reserve; Lastovo MPA (Croatia); Velebit Channel Marine Reserve (Croatia); Karaburun- Sazan MPA (Albania); Butrint National Park (Albania); Samaria MPA (Greece); Pelagos Sanctuary (Italy-Monaco-France).

PIR01_00029 - PON-PRIMA Research and marine infrastructure strengthening (EMBRC-IT)
PON Ricerca e Innovazione 2014-2020
(CCI: 2014IT16M2OP005)
Calls for Proposals for the awarding of grants aimed to enhance research infrastructures, pursuant to Action II.1 of the National Operative Programme – Research and Innovation 2014-2020
Title: Research and marine infrastructure strengthening (EMBRC-IT)
Acronym: PRIMA
Code : PIR01_00029
Duration of the project (in months): 32
Research infrastructure targeted by the project: EMBRC - European Marine Biological Resource Centre
Abstract
Italy has an extraordinary potential in the field of marine research thanks to the heritage of about 2000 high-level researchers. However, this potential remains largely unexpressed due to the limit of the infrastructures. The project PRIMA aims to fill this gap by increasing the Italian competitiveness on the basic and applied marine research in the European context by tightly linking this effort to the EMBRC-ERIC infrastructure and then contextually increasing the importance and impact of Italy in the marine research at European level. The project aims to strengthen the research infrastructures through: i) the acquisition of instruments not available in this research field at national level of relevant technological complexity that allow investigations that are currently not feasible; ii) the completion and strengthening of existing infrastructures to make them competitive in the light of new research developments; iii) the creation of hubs able to allow researchers of the Stazione Zoologica Anton Dohrn, and overall of the country, to access and investigate marine habitats, thus increasing the potential development of some key regions in Italy.
