The Technological Platforms Section is composed by the Units BAC (Bioinformatics, Computational Analysis and Data Management), CMA (Advanced Microscopy Center), CSAM (Sequencing and Molecular Analyses Center) and MoTAX (Taxonomy of Marine Organisms). The Section provides support for structural and molecular studies on marine organisms. Thanks to the strong interaction with the researchers of the Stazione Zoologica and with the Section Access to Marine Ecosystems and Environmental Analysis, The Section Technological Platforms continuously develops experimental procedures to meet the Institute’s needs. The different expertise present in the Section allow the identification of new combination of services useful to strengthen the portfolio of activities of the Institute.

The section consists of 4 cores facilities:

CSAM1The Sequencing and Molecular Analysis Center (CSAM) offers services, training and consultancy in the Molecular Biology field, from the execution of complex procedures to theII foto development of on-demand protocols. This Core Facility developed a sequencing service which includes both classic Sanger with the 3730xl DNA Analyzer, and deep sequencing with the Ion GeneStudio S5, a Real Time PCR and a droplet digital PCR services with the Thermo ViiA7 and QuantStudio 5, and Biorad Qx200 ddPCR instruments, respectively. The Covaris M220 ultrasonicator allows an effective DNA fragmentation for NGS sequencing of Chromatin Immunoprecipitation experiments, for epigenetic studies. The Tecan Freedom EVO 200 liquid handler is devoted to the set-up of high throughput protocols for nucleic acids purification and preparation of real time PCR , ELISA or other assays with a high number of samples in the 96 or 384 well formats. CSAM also supplies the Intitute weekly with oligonucleotides, competent cells, solid and liquid bacterial culture media. Services and instruments available can be booked on Labarchives, for other request feel free to contact us at This email address is being protected from spambots. Motax

Taxonomy has always been part of the scientific activities at Stazione Zoologica. Since its founding, numerous worldwide-recognised specialists have conducted seminal studies on the morphology and biology of the flora and fauna of the Gulf of Naples. Over the years, taxonomy has evolved along with technological development and has been fully integrated within forefront ecological and evolutionary research.
The Marine Organism Taxonomy (MOTax) Unit is a specialized counseling center which exploits advanced resources, skills and expertise that are available today at the SZN for the taxonomy and identification of various groups of marine organisms. Merging traditional morphological approaches and modern technologies such as electron microscopy and barcoding, MOTax provides a wide range of services that include the identification of individual specimens, isolation and cultivation of certified target microalgal organisms, sorting, species identification and counting in benthic and plankton samples in ecological and monitoring projects. As part of SZN's higher education activities, MOTax offers individual training and organizes advanced courses on the taxonomy of marine organisms.
The team is composed by expert taxonomists who are connected to a network of marine taxonomists from Italy and all over Europe. MOTax taxonomists undergo quality assurance auditing that certifies the compliance of the analytical methods used with international standards.

CeMAThe Labs of the Advanced Micrsocopy Center (CMA) host at present two spectral confocal microscopies, an epifluorescence microscope equipped with a thermostatic chamber with CO2 control for live cell imaging, a transmission electron microscope two scanning electron microscopes and all the necessary instruments for sample preparation for both the classic chemical fixation and the crio-fixation.
The personnel of the Center is highly specialised, to ensure the correct application of optic and electron microscopy and to give internal and external users scientific consultancy, technical assistance and formation. Moreover, a section dedicated to research, which strictly interacts with the technical personnel, provides the development of new applications and protocols, especially in the field of living cells and organisms.
Microscopes and preparative instruments are accessible to users following one of these ways:
1) independent use (after education);
2) assisted use, with our personnel supervision;
3) as a service, entirely or partially demanded to our personnel, conveniently informed on the goals of the observations and, possibly, assisted by the researcher during the image acquisition (strongly recommended).
