Research Interests
I obtained a degree in Biology and subsequently specialized in Marine Ecology, achieving professional qualification as a Biologist in 2018. Over the years, my research activities have focused on the study of the larval stages of demersal, mesopelagic, and bathypelagic fish species, as well as on fluctuations in fish stocks. Participation in various oceanographic surveys conducted in the Strait of Sicily allowed me to develop expertise in the use of key plankton sampling devices (Bongo 40, Bongo 90, MPS, Calvet, and WP2), and to collect data on the distribution and formation of neritic and pelagic larval assemblages, analyzing their relationships with major oceanographic variables.
Alongside marine research, I have also taken part in bird ringing campaigns over the years—particularly within the framework of the "Small Islands Project"—to monitor migratory routes and the phenology of seasonal movements of numerous species. These activities aimed to analyze the functional role of Mediterranean islands as stopover sites for migratory birds.
In 2024, I completed a Ph.D. in Applied Biology and Experimental Medicine, focusing on the study of biodegradable bioplastics as a sustainable alternative to traditional polypropylene socks used in mussel farming. The project involved a comparative analysis of the degradation rates and processes of different materials in aquatic environments characterized by varying physicochemical parameters.
Since August 2025, my research has been oriented toward the analysis of larval stages of demersal and bathypelagic fish species along the Ionian coasts of the Italian peninsula. The objective is to characterize the spatial and temporal distribution patterns of these species in relation to key environmental parameters (e.g., temperature, salinity, dissolved oxygen, and currents), and to better understand the ecological dynamics driving recruitment and population structure.
