Research Interests
My research interest is on microalgae biodiversity and its role in regulating the functioning of marine ecosystems. In particular, my research activity is focused on identifying patterns of diversity and distribution of key morpho-functional traits of phytoplankton using field data at the individual level of both taxonomic and functional resolution. Trait-based approach allows to test the potential mechanisms of organization of the phytoplankton community in different environmental conditions, including the impact of anthropogenic pressures. A part of my research activity is, in fact, dedicated to the implementation of indices and indicators of the status health of ecosystems using phytoplankton as biological quality element.
From a methodological point of view, the approach based on morpho-functional traits is explored by combining confocal microscopy and image analysis as a new frontier for biodiversity, ecology and ecotoxicology studies. In particular, I have developed a new method for calculating the cellular biovolume of phytoplankton based on confocal microscopy and 3D reconstruction by image analysis as well as application of new computational models.
My recent work experience as a responsible of both Marine Strategy Project Descriptor Non-Indigenous Species and environmental emergencies related to microalgal blooms has also allowed me to deepen many aspects related to the ecology of species and the functioning of ecosystems.
