Research Interests

My research interests are mainly focused on the valorization of the biotechnological potential of marine microorganisms. One of the main goals is the identification of new molecules from marine microorganisms, which represent an untapped reservoir of compounds and enzymes with high potential especially for pharmaceutical, cosmeceutical and nutraceutical applications. This goal can be achieved by two different approaches. The first approach employs a biodiscovery pipeline starting from the isolation of  microorganisms from different marine environments. The extracts obtained from the cultivation of the isolated microorganisms are then purified by a bioassay-driven purification, using different screenings, to reach the identification of novel bioactive compounds. The second approach is instead genome-based. The genomes of bacteria of interest are sequenced and subjected to genome mining procedures to identify the biosynthetic clusters responsible for the synthesis of the molecules. The cluster are then cloned and recombinantly expressed in appropriate platform. The generation and optimization of these expression platforms is another of mine main research goals. Thanks to the constant technologic progress, the genome-based approach is becoming more appealing, but to unlock its full potential it is necessary to have appropriate and effective expression platforms for recombinant expression. Using metabolic engineering and exploiting the potential of metabolomics and fluxomics, I plan to create and optimize bacterial strains (chassis) for the recombinant expression of molecules of interest derived from marine microorganisms.
