Research Interests

I am interested in the study of biodiversity of scleractnians (Cnidaria, Scleractnia), the so-called corals. In particular, the majority of my studies are focused on the hard corals living in shallow-water environments of tropical and subtropical seas in the Indo-Pacific, representing the major reef-building organisms of coral reefs worldwide, although I also work on corals living in temperate environments such as the Mediterranean Sea. My research is about different aspects of the biology of these marine invertebrates, including systematics, taxonomy, phylogeny, species delimitation, biogeography, evolution, and symbiosis with animals and other taxa. With the aim to investigate these topics, I use an integrated approach, combining data from genetics, morphology, palaeontology, and ecology, within a robust phylogenetic framework. The morphological analyses include light and electron microscopy, while the genetic analyses include the use of both traditional barcoding genes and genomic data obtained with Next Generation Sequencing approaches such as RADseq and metabarcoding.
