Research interests
LTER-MC station is one of the few time series studying planktonic organisms in the Mediterranean Sea, and is one of the longest. The research Program MareChiara on plankton was launched by SZN in 1984, with the aim of understanding the variability in the distribution of plankton communities at different spatial and temporal scales (Ribera d'Alcala et al., 2004; Zingone et al., 2010). Phytoplankton is a key component of the system for his role in the pelagic food webs and biogeochemical fluxes at sea.
The biology, taxonomy and ecology of marine phytoplankton are the fields of my interests, with particular concern to the spatial and tempotal phytoplankton distribution and its links with the environmental conditions.
The tasks include: evaluation of specific composition and abundance through analysis at inverted light microscope, counting of phytoplankton samples weekly collected at Station LTER-MC; the cooperation in the construction and renovation of the website LTER MC http://SZN. macisteweb.com/; and the taxonomic study of some species difficult to identify in the light microscope through scanning electron microscope and molecular analysis. I use light and electron microscopy as well as various molecular methods.
