Research interests
My main research activities, carried out as a fellow at the Anton Dohrn Zoological Station, focus on the study of resistance to high growth temperatures through direct evolution in marine Chlamydomonas. The mechanisms of heat stress resistance are poorly understood in unicellular algae. Nevertheless, primary productivity in aquatic environments depends heavily on the ability of planktonic primary producers to withstand heat waves and contribute to oxygenation of the environment. In this research project, the marine alga Chlamydomonas marinoi will be subjected to direct evolution for the selection of strains capable of growing at temperatures above those optimal for this species. At the same time, I am collaborating on activities involving the study of bacterial communities in vent ecosystems.
