Research Interests

My research interests mainly focus on applying remote sensing technologies to benthic fauna and habitats. Through my PhD project, I will work on understanding and assessing how marine biodiversity and ecosystem processes of benthic communities evolve under global environmental change by integrating 3D imaging techniques, machine learning, fieldwork, and environmental data analysis (e.g. temperature, pH, salinity). Specifically, I will investigate the effects of ocean acidification and marine heatwave events (MHWs) on benthic communities associated with volcanic CO2 emission systems on the island of Ischia. In parallel, I am studying the habitat use of some benthic macroinvertebrates (Holothuria tubulosa and Holothuria poli) through the analysis of environmental descriptors derived from high-resolution seabed maps produced with Structure-from-Motion photogrammetry. I am also interested in studying marine litter impacts on benthic communities through visual census techniques (ROV) and the conservation and management of fish resources and small-scale fisheries.
