Research Intersts
At University, I acquired an interdisciplinary background in technology applications based on a deep knowledge and use of biological systems. I realized that such information could be important in the Calabria region, which is rich of environmental resources and potential for biotechnological development. Subsequently, I cultivated an interest in the field of cultural heritage conservation science, aiming to preserve the great underwater historical and archaeological heritage in our seas. In the marine environment, endolithic and epilithic micro- and macro-foulers play a crucial role in the degradation of submerged archaeological material. However, in the field of underwater archaeology, knowledge of the impact of microorganisms on archaeological remains is limited. I am currently involved in a research project that aims to gain more knowledge of the organisms that colonize underwater surfaces. It is necessary to know what they can do, what they actually do in situ, and what strategies can be developed to slow down or prevent the attack of biocolonizers. To know the biofoulers and how to prevent or reduce biodeterioration processes in the marine environment can help to design eco-friendly antifouling molecules by chemical synthesis, or identification of natural products of marine origin with potential applications in underwater cultural heritage conservation.
