Research Interests
My research activity mainly focuses on the effect of climate change and bioinvasions on species interactions and biodiversity in the Mediterranean benthic assemblages. For several years I have been studying biological invasion processes emphasizing the importance of biodiversity in affecting the spread and success of alien species in the Mediterranean marine coastal ecosystems. Recently, my interest has been focused on the Eastern Mediterranean Sea which is probably the most sensitive region to warming and biological invasions. For this reason, I have lately been working on the interactive effects of climate change and bioinvasions on species interactions in macrophyte-based benthic assemblages by combining fieldwork, mesocosm simulation experiments and modeling to predict potential shifts in interactions among the system’s components. More recently, I have expanded my interest to the biodiversity loss of native biota due to climate change in this fast-warming area through the evaluation of taxonomic and functional diversity of benthic assemblage descriptors (i.e., phylum Mollusca). This last activity implies an important contribution to the enhancement and dissemination of scientific museum collections
