Research Interests

My research interest focus to investigate by using an integrated approach, food-webs transmitted endoparasites in order to add knowledge on the state of the biodiversity of the marine ecosystem of the Mediterranean Sea waters and consider those target parasites as indirect indicators of marine food webs integrity. This follows the hypothesis according to which parasitic load, genetic variability, and effects on the host, of those endoparasites, are correlated with the abundance of host populations, i.e. target fish, squids, and invertebrate species - linked to each other by trophic relationships. I specially focus on the family of Anisakidae (Nematoda) and the order of Trypanorhyncha (Cestoda). Those parasites have a complex life cycles, often requiring hosts from different trophic levels to complete their life-cycle. cetaceans and elasmobranchs serves as definitive host respectively, with crustaceans, squids, and fish as intermediate/transport hosts.
