Research Interests
My research activity is mainly focused on the responses of coralline algae to climate change. Corallinales, in particular, are considered to be among the most important ecosystem engineers due to their ability to create submerged and partially emerged CaCO3 bioconstructions. These algae regulate the concentration of inorganic carbon in surface water and in fact have been included in the 'carbon blue habitats', plus their high magnesium content thallus makes them suitable organisms to understand phenomena related to climate change and also for their possible role in climate change mitigation.
The aim of my project will be to comprehend if rhodoliths-beds in the Mediterranean Sea are sinks or sources of carbon, with the aim to estimate their importance in the oceanic carbon cycle carrying out both field and laboratory experiments that will allow us to quantify the current magnitude and direction of carbon fluxes associated to these beds and to understand possible future changes in order to avert biodiversity loss.
