Grant Writing & Career Development
SZN Course Coordinators: Dr. Marco Borra (RIMAR), Dr. Wiebe Kooistra (EMI)
Description:
Ph.D. students are often so immersed in their Ph.D. thesis that they do not give much thought to what will happen after their Ph.D. thesis defense. Of course, a Ph.D. gives you an advantage in the job market. It opens doors to academic careers. Educated and skilled people are in demand in a knowledge-based economy. But it does not mean that jobs or post-doctoral grants come gravitating towards you just like that once you can put Ph.D. behind your name. You have to be proactive; you have to take your career into your own hands.
In this course you will learn how to:
•Organise your career plan; how to set short and long-term objectives,
•Explore the possibilities for getting research grants,
•Write a research proposal about what you wish to achieve,
•Target the proposal accurately on what the granting body requests from you,
•What issues do you need to pay attention to when writing a proposal,
•Examples of funding agencies providing grants: small and big grants
