Research Interests

The vertical structure of the oceans (i.e. the variations of temperature, salinity and currents with depth) regulates the physical processes taking place from the surface to the bottom. Its state results from the transfer of energy of large-scales forcings (e.g., winds, sea-air and ice-air buoyancy exchanges, tides) toward small dissipative scales where water properties are modified through the turbulent mixing. This transfer of energy occurs via a large variety of phenomena (e.g., internal waves, eddies, filaments, overturns) interacting and overlapping in space and time, whose roles are not perfectly disentangled. These different processes are regulated by the stratification which, in turn, is modified through the micro-scale mixing they ultimately provide.
This conditioning of the water column is of importance for biological communities as it also regulates biological activity, since it controls the vertical transfer and uptakes of nutrients.
In a context of data analyses and projections that indicate that global warming leads to stronger stratification, it is of importance to identify which processes are the most sensitive to changes. To address this task, I analyse and compare both in-situ observations (fine-scale hydrology and currents data, micro-scale turbulence measurements) and numerical outputs (ocean circulation models, machine learning fitting) to infer the intermittency and variability of the turbulence and mixing in both coastal and open sea areas.
