Supervisor: Dott.ssa Ristoratore Filomena
Appointed on project: “Deuteronoise: Characterisation of maritime noise in different European basins and its impact on ecological relevant deuterostome invertebrates”
Research Interests
In recent years, maritime traffic has been recognised as one of the main sources of underwater noise pollution, but the effects of this pollutant have been assessed mostly on vertebrates. Invertebrates are important contributors to the biodiversity and ecology of ecosystems. It has been proven that they are able to sense particle pressure and/or particle motion. The Deuteronoise project aims to assess the noise pollution stemming from maritime traffic and the different effects it produces on deuterostome organisms. In particular, as part of the Ristoratore Lab, I assess the response to noise of the tunicate Ciona robusta across different developmental stages at the transcriptomic level and, in collaboration with other labs, at behavioural and biochemical levels. Tunicate mechanoreceptors are adept at detecting sound waves and particle movements, making them susceptible targets of noise pollution.
